The invention relates to the field of metallurgy of the production of refractory materials - carbonitrides, namely, to the creation of a process for the production of titanium carbonitride, which allows to create a homogeneous product of a specified composition with a minimum content of free carbon. The method is carried out by high-temperature synthesis of titanium-containing compounds in a nitrogen atmosphere during the magnesium-thermal reduction of a mixture of titanium tetrachloride and tetrachlorethylene in a ratio of 4,5 to 5,1 at a temperature of 1010…1080 °C. Due to this, homogeneous titanium carbonitride of the given composition with

the minimum content of impurities and the cost of titanium carbonitride is reduced by 15…25 % due to the use of industrial products and a decrease in the process temperature.
